This virtuoso Montréal-based Baroque ensemble of flutes, recorders, strings & percussion explores the relationships between the dances and improvised music performed by itinerant gypsy musicians and the concerti of Bach, Telemann and other early composers.
This opening concert of our 20th anniversary season is presented through the generous support of Adrian and Judith van Zon in honor of our founder and guiding presence, Simon Wainrib.

What the critics say about Ensemble Caprice:
« A true world of expressive gestures, colors and delicate ornaments. The pleasure of contrasting dynamics can be heard clearly. »
Klassik Heute – Germany
« Yes, this recital wears its title well; it is a sweet folly that emerges out of this fascinating encounter between early music and works composed by Matthias Maute. Striking! » Classica – France
« We were transported to exalted realms… » La Presse – Canada
« Brilliantly played and excellently interpreted. » Stuttgarter Zeitung – Germany
« Such dazzling virtuosity on the recorder leaves you in staggering daze! We wonder by which diabolical trick the flautists manage to articulate at such speed, with so much breath and energy. » Le Devoir – Canada
« Ensemble Caprice, the Montreal-based early music group, knows how to make an entrance… In the Presto, Maute tossed off runs and ornaments at hair-raising speed, but with such control that he was able to give dynamic and expressive shape to the whirls of notes. » Sun-Sentinel – USA
« The playing of the musicians was expressive, the dynamics pliable as putty, the plasticity of their phrasing warm and extravagant, and their virtuosity brilliant. » The Chronicle Herald – Canada
